The EMU wrestling team defeated Harvard and Sacred Heart before falling to Binghamton at the Sprawl & Brawl

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad won two of its three duals at the Journeymen Sprawl & Brawl, defeating Harvard and Sacred Heart before falling to host Binghamton, to open up the dual meet portion of its schedule Sunday, Nov. 21, in Binghamton, N.Y.

The Eagles posted a 24-22 win over Harvard and defeated Sacred Heart 42-0. Binghamton was their lone setback as the Bearcats topped EMU 29-6. Following their first three dual matches of the season, Eastern Michigan moves to 2-1 on the season.

"Overall it was a pretty decent showing,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto said. “Jared Germaine showed a lot of guts today going 2-0 and grueling through some injuries. We took a huge chance and sat Jared in the last match against Harvard, but we knew we were getting six points back at heavyweight due to a forfeit.”

Germaine defeated Sacred Heart's Billy Chamberlain, 12-10, and claimed one of two Eagle wins over Binghamton with an 8-4 decision over Ryan Gerondel. The redshirt freshman went 2-0 only to be outdone by teammate Wes Schroeder who was the lone Eagle to go 3-0 on the day. Also recording two wins on the day were Chris Eggert, Nick Whitenburg, Andrew Novak and Seth Schaner.

“With Mike LeHolm out, Seth Schaner did a great job filling in,” DelPorto said. “He went 2-1 and both matches he won were by major decisions. The match he lost was against a nationally-ranked opponent and I thought wrestled well in the loss.”

Binghamton, who received ranking votes in the latest NWCA/USA Today national poll, has a ranked 141-pounder in No. 20 Anwar Goeres. Goeres defeated Schaner 10-3 in his match.

“We have a lot of work to do and we know what we have to do to get better,” DelPorto said. “We will walk away from the Sprawl & Brawl 2-1 and optimistic about the season. Every dual we wrestled today we started at least seven freshmen and sophomores in the line-up.”

The Eagles will enjoy a week off leading up to their dual home opener against Cleveland State, Dec. 3, at Bowen Field House. The meet is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
