ON TAP THIS WEEK: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad will host its first dual meet of the season as it takes on Cleveland State University at Bowen Field House this Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. It will be a busy and exciting night as the Eagles will host a middle school wrestling dual prior to their meet with CSU. Flat River Wrestling Club will take on Team Metro All-Stars at 5 p.m.
At halftime of EMU/CSU, a ceremony will take place to recognize those who purchased a locker in the Eagles' newly renovated loccker room.
“We will be honoring the people who have generously puchased a locker in our new locker room facility,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto said. “We will also have a post-match tour of the new facility and a post-match reception at a local establishment.”
Details of the reception will be announced at the match.
EAGLE UPDATE: Last time out, Eastern Michigan trekked to Binghamton, N.Y. to take part in the Sprawl & Brawl Duals where they wrestled against Harvard, Sacred Heart and Binghamton. The Eagles won two of their three matches, falling to only Binghamton in the one day event. Heavyweight Wes Schroeder was the lone Eagle to go 3-0 on the day while several others recorded multiple wins for the Green and White. EMU defeated Harvard, 24-22, and Sacred Heart, 42-0, before dropping a 29-6 decision to Binghamton. EMU starts the year 2-1 for the second straight season.
EAGLES AND VIKINGS: EMU and Cleveland State will lock up this week at Bowen Field House where the Eagles hope to make it four wins in a row against their Green and White rivals. After dropping his first meeting to CSU, Head Coach Derek DelPorto has now won three in a row including a 36-6 rout in their meeting last season.
“The 1st home dual is always fun and because of all the extras taking place, it is even more exciting,” DelPorto said. “Cleveland State is a very scrappy team that brings a lot of intensity and hard-nosed wrestling to the mat. I would expect a very physical dual and a bunch of great match-ups.
DEBUTS APLENTY: Saying goodbye to eight letterwinners including three starters from a season ago has opened the door for young talent to emerge as prime contributors for the Eagles. Four freshmen will be making their dual meet home debuts against Cleveland State this Friday.
“Freshmen Jared Germaine (125), Mike LeHolm (141), Khodor Hoballah (184) and Nick Whitenburg (197) will be making their dual meet home debuts,” DelPorto said. “I'm looking forward to their home meet careers getting kicked off on Friday.”
THE CAPTAIN'S CLUB: Head Coach Derek DelPorto announced the captains for the 2010-11 squad. As chosen by their peers, senior heavyweight David Wade - who is coming off a season in which he qualified for the NCAA Championships - headlines the five-member group. Redshirt freshman Jared Germaine, sophomore Aaron Sulzer and juniors J.J. Johnson and Corey Phillips round out this year's captains for the Eagles.
SIX EAGLES RANKED IN NOVEMBER COACHES RANKINGS: Six Eagles are featured in this month's Mid-American Conference individual class rankings picked by the coaches. Corey Phillips is tied for second with Mallie Shuster (KSU) at 149#. Jared Germaine remains fourth, the same position he held in the preseason rankings. Nick Whitenburg (197#) and David Wade (HWT) hold their preseason rankings as well as each are third. At 133#, Andrew Novak is also third while Aaron Sulzer ranks fourth at 157#.
