Men's Golf Adds Four for 2011-12 Campaign

Additions to the Eagles are from Michigan and Ohio

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University Head Men's Golf Coach Bruce Cunningham, in his continual development of one of the top programs in the Mid-American Conference, has signed four players to National Letters of Intent for 2011-12. Cunningham announced Thursday, Nov. 18, that Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.-Holt), John Chaney (Shaker Heights, Ohio-Gimour Academy), Tommy Conway (Jackson, Mich.-Lumen Christi) and Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) will join the Eagles next season.

"We are thrilled to have made the additions of a strong recruiting class," mentioned Cunningham. "These student-athletes will have both immediate and long-term impacts on Eastern Michigan men's golf program."

Burt, ranked 239th nationally in the 2011 Class by Junior Golf Scoreboard, was a participant in the 2010 USGA Junior Amateur Championship at Egypt Valley Country Club. The Dimondale, Mich. native shot a second round 77 and 153 total, but missed the final cut at the prestigious event. He also placed 11th at the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) at Purdue and 21st at the FCWT event at Notre Dame in 2010. In 2009, Burt was the state of Michigan's Division I Regional medalist and finished seventh at the MHSAA State finals. He also competed in the 2009 Junior World Championship held at Torrey Pines, Calif.

Chaney, ranked 139th in the 2011 Class by the American Junior Golf Association, recorded a fourth-place finish at the 2010 IJGT Bridgestone Tournament of Champions with a three-over par 218 (72-75-71). He followed it up with a seventh-place showing at the AJGA Vanderbilt/Franklin and a 16th-place finish at the AJGA Buick/Warwick Hills. Also in 2010, Chaney was 23rd at the Hudson International Junior and 24th at the AJGA Ohio State Tournament. Just a year earlier, the Shaker Heights, Ohio native placed 11th at the AJGA Ping Tournament in Phoenix and was the runner-up at the IJGT Penn State Tournament.

Conway was a 2010 first-team All-State selection after finishing in third place at the MHSAA Division III State Finals. Just a season earlier, he was a 2009 MHSAA Dream Team selection and placed third at the MHSAA Division I State Finals. In 2009, the Jackson, Mich. native was also the state of Michigan's Division I Regional individual champion. Conway took part in the 2010 Michigan Open recording a 146 (72-74) along with picking up a fifth- place showing at the IJGT Hershey Links.

Jones, ranked 119th nationally in the 2011 Class by National Golf Scoreboard, was a participant in the 2010 USGA Junior Amateur Championship at Egypt Valley Country Club. The Dewitt, Mich. native shot a first-round 73 and 150 total, but missed the final cut at the prestigious event. He also took part in the 2008 U.S. USGA Junior Amateur at Shoal Creek, Ala., the 2010 Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines, Calif. and the 2010 Optimist Junior World in Palm Beach, Fla.. Jones was also the state of Michigan's Division II Regional individual champion and a first-team All State selection as his team won the state title.

The Eagles' spring campaign gets under way in March when the squad travels to Tampa, Fla., to compete in the Ron Smith/USF Invitational, March 4-6, 2011.
