— The Eastern Michigan women's swimming and diving team dropped their season opener against Ohio University today, Oct. 29, at Jones Natatorium with a score of 165-135.

The Eagles start the season at 0-1, while Ohio moves to 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Briana Emig (Sewickly, Pa.-Ambridge) shined for the Green and White after taking second in the 200 free as well as clinching first place in two events on the afternoon.

Emig started the meet off with a first place finish in the 1,000 freestyle, touching the wall at 10:15.14. In the 500 freestyle, Emig also claimed first in the event with a time of 4:58.98. She was barely two seconds shy of yet another first place finish in the 200 freestyle, but Ohio's Amanda Traylor snuck ahead for the victory.

Meanwhile, Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow) was busy having herself a great day as well. Maraskine placed first in the 100 backstroke, besting Ohio's Rachel Stearns with her time of 56.99. The junior also helped her team to a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, joining teammates Chelsea Allard (Walnut Creek, Calif.-Lake Forest (Ill.)), Samantha Nameth (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor), and Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown) whose combined efforts led to a finish of 1:47.27.

Allard and Kowalski also boasted first place finishes of their own. Allard was the top finisher in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:06.27. Kowalski narrowly missed the top spot in the 50 freestyle finishing second at 23.66, just one-tenth of a second behind Ohio's Anne Donovan, but she would bounce back later in the meet, defeating Donovan with a first place finish of 52.27 in the 100 freestyle.

In both the one and three-meter dives, sophomore Kelly Hendricks (Schaumburg, Ill.-Contant) was impressive on the evening. She scored 275.71 points en route to a second place finish in the one-meter event, and later posted 304.73 points for a first place finish in the three-meter dive.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host MAC opponent Ball State in a conference dual-meet. The event is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
