THE TEAMS: The Eastern Michigan University football team will hit the road Saturday, Oct. 23, for its final non-conference game of the season when the Eagles square off with the University of Virginia Cavaliers. Game time is 6 p.m. at David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The game will be televised on ESPN3. EMU is coming off its first win of the season, a dramatic 41-38 overtime victory at Ball State University Saturday, Oct. 16. Virginia is 2-4 on the year after dropping a 44-10 home-field decision to North Carolina, Oct. 16.
ALL-TIME VS. VIRGINIA AND THE ACC: Eastern Michigan and Virginia are meeting for the first time. For EMU it will be the fifth game against an ACC opponent. The Eagles have played Maryland four times since the 2001 season and have an 0-4 mark against the Terrapins. Maryland won, 50-3, in 2001, 45-3 in 2002, 37-13 in 2003 in Ypsilanti, and 51-24 in 2008.
REACHING 1,000: The journey to Charlottesville, Va., Oct. 23, to face the Virginia Cavaliers will mark the 1,000th intercollegiate contest for EMU, now in its 118th football season.
EXTENDED ROAD TRIP: Eastern Michigan University football fans will have a four-week road trip end with the Virginia game, Oct. 23. EMU played at Vanderbilt, Oct. 9, at Ball State, Oct. 16, and at Virginia, Oct. 23, and will return home, Oct. 30, for a MAC West Division matchup with Toledo. That EMU-UT game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. in Rynearson Stadium.Oct. 2, and then added two at Vanderbilt, Oct. 9, with successful boots of 22 and 42 yards.
FINAL PIECE TO THE SCHEDULING PUZZLE: The Virginia-Eastern Michigan football game will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Oct. 11. The contest at Scott Stadium will be televised by ESPN3.com.
RETURN TO VIRGINIA: EMU has three players on its roster from the state of Virginia. Tailback Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Military), linebacker Steve Brown (Charlottesville, Va.-St. Anne's Belfield) and Reggie Wheeler (Newport News, Va.-C.D. Hylton-Hargrave Military) are all Virginia natives and played their high school football in that state.
GILLETT WINS THREE AWARDS FOR BALL STATE PERFORMANCE: Sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) turned in a record-setting performance against Ball State University Saturday, Oct. 16, and he was rewarded for his efforts with three weekly football awards. Gillett was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week, was chosen rivals.com MAC Player of the Week and was an honorable mention Quarterback of the Week selection by collegefootballperformance.com.
RECORD-SETTING EFFORT: EMU sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) turned in a record-setting effort to lead the Eagles to their first win of the season Saturday, Oct. 16, in Muncie, Ind. against the Ball State University Cardinals. Gillett set EMU QB records for most rushes (35) and net rushing yards (189)while scoring two rushing touchdowns and also completing 10-of-18 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns in EMU's 41-38 come-from-behind overtime win. Gillett scored on touchdown runs of six and two yards and threw touchdown passes of 73, 33 and 12 yards, with the last one a 12-yard TD throw to tight end Ben Thayer (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Hacket Catholic Central) in overtime to give EMU the 41-38 victory. Gillett's 35 rushes is the 17th best in EMU history and the most ever by a QB while his 189 net rushing yards is the 18th best effort in school history, and also the most ever by a QB. Gillett led EMU back from an early 21-0 deficit to gain the win, the Eagles' first of the season. He had 53 total offensive plays and 414 yards in total offense, the ninth best single-game effort in school history.
EVENING UP THE OT EFFORT: EMU's 41-38 overtime win at Ball State Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, evens EMU's extra-session record at 4-4. BREAKING INTO THE TOP 10: Sophomore tight end Garrett Hoskins (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Creston) turned in an acrobatic catch for a 73-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) Saturday, Oct. 16, in a 41-38 overtime win at Ball State. That catch for Hoskins is tied for the 10th-longest in EMU history.
BIGGEST COMEBACK: EMU trailed by 21 points Saturday, Oct. 16, as Ball State raced out to a 21-point lead midway through the second quarter before the Eagles mounted the biggest comeback in school history. Eastern rallied to out-score the Cardinals, 41-17 the rest of the way for the 41-38 overtime win. The only other EMU team to rally for 20 points or more was the 2000 squad that came back from a 32-12 deficit to score 27 unanswered points to defeat Northern Illinois, 39-32, Nov. 11, in Rynearson Stadium.
TELEVISION TIME: The 2010 EMU football team will make seven television appearances. The EMU-Ohio State game, Sept. 25, was on ABC, and the EMU-Vanderbilt contest, Oct. 9, was on ESPNU. The EMU-Ohio game, Oct. 2, was shown on ESPN regional and there will be three games, EMU at Miami, Sept. 11, EMU home vs. Toledo, Oct. 30, and EMU at Buffalo, Nov. 20, on SportsTime Ohio. FIRST FOR TWO: EMU senior tight end Ben Thayer (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Hacket Catholic Central) turned in the first two-touchdown reception day of his career when he had a 33-yard touchdown pass and a 12-yard TD strike, the last the game-winning score, in a 41-38 overtime win over Ball State Saturday, Oct. 16.
