YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team used an 18-4 second half run on its way to a 73-55 win over in-state rival Central Michigan in the Mid-American Conference opener Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Convocation Center.
Much like in their previous outing against the University of North Dakota, free throws helped keep the Eagles (11-2, 1-0 MAC) in the first half and a second half outburst was instrumental in leading them to yet another win at home to remain unbeaten at the Convo, pushing their record to 6-0 to start the year and giving them a six-game winning streak. It is the longest such streak since 2005-06, giving EMU a school record-tying 11-2 start to the year.
Freshman duo, Chenise Miller (Oak Park, Mich.-West Bloomfield) and Lindsey Mahone (Corpus Christi, Texas-Mary Carroll) had breakout games for EMU. Miller recorded her first double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds off the bench while Mahone chipped in a career high 13 points in her 10th start of the season.
Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford), who ranked 14th in the nation in scoring at 20.7 points per game entering Wednesday night, did not score her first basket until 11 seconds were left in the first half. She finished with 13 points and closed out the Eagles' key 18-4 run with a three-point basket to push the EMU lead to 58-46 with 8:18 left in the game.
Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) turned in another all around performance with a game-high 15 points, six rebounds and six assists. Just 14 games into the season, the Eagle point guard has set a new career high with 94 assists, surpassing her previous high of 92 assists set last season.
Eastern Michigan was 28-of-39 from the charity stripe for the game and went 19-of-27 in the opening frame to erase an 18-5 deficit early on and minimize a dismal 36.4 (20-of-55) percent shooting performance. They avenge a season sweep that saw Central Michigan (3-10, 0-1 MAC) take both meetings in 2008-09.
EMU forced 26 Chippewa miscues and held CMU to 36.5 percent (23-of-63) from the field.
The Eagles will have a quick turnaround as they head down Interstate-94 to take on Western Michigan University Saturday, Jan. 9, as part of a doubleheader MAC tilt with the men. The women's tip is slated for 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4 p.m.
