YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team overcame early turnovers and poor shooting to win its first game of the new year, 59-47, over the Chicago State University Cougars here at the Convocation Center Sunday, Jan. 3.
EMU junior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) just missed a double-double with 23 points and nine rebounds while sophomore guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Robichaud) added 11 for the Eagles, now 8-5.
Center Carl Montgomery and guard Christian Wall added 10 each for the visiting Cougars, now 5-10 on the year.
Just four minutes into the contest, the Eagles found themselves looking up from a 9-2 deficit, having committed six turnovers and making only 1-of-6 field goal attempts. But the Eagles made a quick turnaround. After falling behind, 17-4, Bowdry ignited a run that would allow Eastern to close the gap to 24-19 by halftime. During the run, Bowdry had seven points, Green added five, and junior forward Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy (Hillsborough C.C.) knocked down a three-pointer.
The second half started much like it ended for EMU as the squad opened up with a 5-0 run to knot the game at 24 apiece after a Matt Balkema (Warren, Mich.-Cousino) jumper and a Green three-pointer. Chicago State responded, however, by pushing its lead back up to three, 27-24, after a two-handed dunk by center Carl Montgomery.
The Eagles would once again use a Bowdry-propelled run to spark a comeback and take the lead for good. This time, the preseason All-Mid-American Conference performer notched back-to-back layups during EMU's 12-4 run. The cougars would come as close as 42-36, but Bowdry and the rest of the Eagles were too much for the visitors to handle. EMU pushed ahead by as much as 10 at two different times following three-pointers from Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) and Green.
The win for the Eagles marked their final game before opening up MAC play on the road in Kalamazoo against Western Michigan University. The Jan. 9 game is slated for a 4 p.m. tip.
