Wrestling Sweeps Through EMU Duals with Trio of Victories

EMU completes non-conference schedule with dominating performance
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— In its final non-conference action of the 2009-10 season, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team swept a trio of duals Saturday, Jan. 23, against Olivet College, 32-6, the University of Indianapolis, 36-6, and Thiel College, 41-6, at Bowen Field House. The Eagles won 25-of-30 matches on the day and improved their season record to 10-8-1 and 0-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
“True” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) and junior Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) each posted perfect 3-0 records at the event, pusing their season marks to 18-13 and 11-13, respectively.
The Green and White started out strong against Olivet, winning eight-of-10 matches en route to a 32-6 drubbing of the Comets. “True” freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) (125 lbs.) and senior Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) (165 lbs.) each recorded major decisions while Joseph notched a pin of David Firlik at the 53 second mark of the 184 lbs. bout.
Additionally, six Eagles recorded decisions against the Comets, while junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) won the heavyweight bout via forfeit.
With two duals remaining, the Eagles continued their dominance against Indianapolis to the tune of a 36-6 route. After Egbert was pinned at 125 lbs. to begin the dual, senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Pulm) returned the favor with a pin of Ethan Harris at the 4:11 mark of the 133 lbs. match to knot the score at six.
EMU won the remaining eight matches which were highlighted by a trio of major decisions by senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) at 141 lbs., freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) at 165 lbs. and senior Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) at 197 lbs.
In the final match against Thiel, the Eagles took an opening-match technical fall from Egbert and never looked back to complete the three-dual sweep in convincing fashion, 41-6. Three Eagles, sophomore J.J. Johnson (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) (149 lbs.), Brandel (165 lbs.) and Hendrick (174 lbs.) managed pins over their respective opponents.
The Eagles will now be idle until Wednesday, Feb. 3, when they host the University at Buffalo in a Mid-American Conference tussle slated for 7 p.m.
