Gymnastics Drops Season Opener at Kent State

Senior Erin Grigg posts a team-best all-around score in the loss
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team dropped its season opener Friday night, Jan. 22, at the M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio, as the Eagles fell, 195.175-191.000, to the defending Mid-American Conference champions from Kent State University.
Kent State's Christina Lenny and Christine Abou-Mitri scored meet best all-around scores of 39.200 and 39.125 to help pace the Golden Flashes.
Senior Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield) led the Eagles, scoring a team-best all-around score of 38.175 in the contest. Grigg tallied a 9.750 mark on the vault and a 9.725 mark in the floor exercise. The senior also carded marks of 9.600 on the beam and 9.100 on the bars.
True freshman Kaylyn Millick (Washington, Pa.-Trinity) performed well in her first collegiate contest, tallying an all-around score of 38.050. Millick notched a team-best mark of 9.725 on the bars, while tallying scores of 9.525, 9.150, and 9.650 on the vault, beam, and floor, respectively.
Junior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorne Woods, Ill.-Carmel) added a team-best score of 9.750 on the beam, while sophomore Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ontario-Brantford Collegiate Institute) added marks of 9.650 and 9.625 on the bars and floor, respectively.
Sophomore Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) began her second season on a solid note, recording scores of 9.525 and 9.625 on the bars and floor exercise, respectively.
Senior Samantha Golden (Denville, N.J.-Morris Knolls) added a 9.525 mark on the vault for the Eagles, while bars-specialist Heather Qualls (Albuquerque, N.M. -La Cueva) carded a 9.650 in the loss for EMU.
Redshirt freshman Amanda Fuller (Hamilton, Ontario-St. Mary's) registered an impressive mark in the floor exercise in her first collegiate competition, as she carded a 9.600, good for fifth on the team. Fuller also recorded an 8.700 on the vault.
Sophomroe Kelli Fisher (Dayton, Ohio-Northmont) carded EMU's second best score on the vault in the contest, as her 9.650 was good for eighth overall in the loss.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of Bowen Field House next week, as the Chippewas from Central Michigan University invade Ypsilanti for a Mid-American Conference match-up Saturday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m.
