EMU Hosts Toledo in Mid-American Conference Home Opener

STRONG START: EMU's 8-6 record this season is the best start since the 2004-05 squad went 9-5 in its first 14 games.
CHECKING THE SERIES WITH TOLEDO: The Eagles and Rockets will be meeting for the 84th time and Toledo holds a 45-38 advantage in the series that dates all the way back to the 1917-18 season. The two teams split last year's games, with Toledo notching a 69-57 win, Jan. 17, 2009, in Toledo and Eastern coming back to record a 58-49 win, Feb. 25, 2009, in Ypsilanti.
EMU will be out to even its Mid-American Conference record at 1-1 after the Eagles suffered a 61-47 setback at Western Michigan Saturday, Jan. 9. Eastern is 8-6 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Toledo is 3-12 overall and 0-1 in MAC play after losing a 59-48 decision at home Saturday, Jan. 9, against Central Michigan University.
CLOSE TO A GRAND: EMU redshirt junior Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) enters Wednesday's, Jan. 13, home game against Toledo needing just two points to become just the 27th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The 6-foot-6 Bowdry has scored 998 points in his 78-game EMU career. He is currently leading the Mid-American Conference in rebounding (10.6) and is third in scoring (18.6).
DOBBINS TO RETURN?: EMU senior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) is expected to return to action this week. The 6-foot-8 Dobbins has missed the last six games with a stress fracture of his lower right leg. Dobbins, who is averaging 10.1 points and 3.6 rebounds, started at Ohio State, Dec. 5, but played just four minutes before being sidelined with the leg injury.
MEDLOCK, DOBBINS, BOWDRY CLIMB EMU CAREER LADDERS: The EMU trio of Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright), Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville), and Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) are all making major moves up the EMU career rankings in scoring, rebounding and three-point shooting. Medlock is now tied for 16th in career scoring with Earle Higgins with 1,235 points, the 17th player in school history to reach the 1,200-point plateau. Bowdry has moved up to 27th with 998 points and Dobbins is 38th at 847. Bowdry has 551 career rebounds for 17th while Dobbins is 36th in rebounding with 424 and Medlock is tied for 69th at 257. Medlock is the sixth ranked three-point shooter with 169 career triples and is ninth in career assists at 331. Medlock is the 12th player in school history to reach 300 career assists while Bowdry is the 22nd player to grab 500+ career rebounds.
TWO STRONG EFFORTS: Senior Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing-Bridgton Academy) turned in a career best four blocks in a 59-47 win over Chicago State, Jan. 3, and he came right back with a season-best seven rebounds at Western Michigan, Jan. 9. The 6-foot-6 redshirt junior has 48 career blocks to rank 15th in the EMU record book in that category.
MEDLOCK TURNS 21: EMU senior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) turned in the 21st 20+ scoring game of his career with a game-high 24 points in a 72-58 win over Northwood Wednesday, Dec. 30. Medlock had five 20-point efforts as a freshman and sophomore, eight as a junior and has had three this season.
RAMSEY REACHES 50: EMU men's Head Basketball Coach Charles E. Ramsey reached the 50-win plateau with the Eagles' 59-47 non-conference win over a visiting Chicago State team Sunday, Jan. 3. Ramsey is the seventh head coach in EMU men's basketball history to record a minimum of 50 career victories. Ben Braun, currently the head coach at Rice University, is the all-time coaching leader with 185 wins followed by Elton J. Rynearson with 160, and Jim Dutcher 127.
FIRST FOR THE NEW YEAR: EMU's 59-47 win over Chicago State, Jan. 3, marked the first time in the last three years that the Eagles have opened the new with a win. Eastern had dropped the previous two first games of a new year, both against Chicago State
