CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The struggles continued for a youthful Eastern Michigan University volleyball team Tuesday evening, Sept. 29, with a 3-0 (23-25, 12-25, 14-25) setback to Cleveland State University in non-conference action here at Woodling Gymnasium. The Vikings posted a stellar .430 hitting percentage (47-7-93) to improve to 13-5 overall, while the Eagles fall to 1-16.
In just her third match back following a broken hand, senior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) led the Green and White with 14 kills. Freshman Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) had 10 put-a-ways as the Eagles notched a .200 attack percentage (35-16-95) for the contest. Sophomore setter Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) in her return to northeast Ohio dished out 27 assists.
CSU's Jordan Goad handed out 40 assists while Liz Fazio finished with 14 kills and 12 digs and Beth Greulich added 11 kills, while hitting .500 (11-1-20). Kara Koch chipped in eight kills, while Maggie Bonomini tied Fazio for match-high honors with 12 digs.
The Vikings committed just seven attack errors in 93 attempts with 43 kills. CSU also had more digs (38-32), assists (45-34), aces (7-1) and blocks (9-4) than the Eagles.
The Green and White return to Ypsilanti for a pair of MAC contests Friday, Oct. 2, versus the University of Toledo and Saturday, Oct. 3, against Ball State University. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. Fans attending Saturday's football game versus Temple University at 1 p.m. also receive free admission to the volleyball match by presenting their ticket stub.
