YPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan University senior golfer Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) has been selected to participate in the 2009 NCAA Regional Championship, May 14-16, at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
While Ross received the good news Monday, the Eagles found out that they just missed qualifying as a team. With Ross qualifying for individual play, the Eagles have now had a presence in the NCAA Division I regional in five straight years. The Eagles qualified as a team in both 2007 and 2008 as Mid-American Conference champions while former Eagles' standout Korey Mahoney qualified as an individual the previous two seasons.
Fresh off a runner-up finish team finish at the 2009 MAC Men's Golf Championship, Ross was one of five Eagles to walk away with postseason awards. Ross was named first team All-MAC while juniors Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary), Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) were selected second team All-MAC. Sophomore Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) and Burke also garnered all-tournament team accolades.
Ross moves up to the MAC's first team after back-to-back second team honors in 2007 and 2008.The Dundas, Ontario native averaged 73.6 strokes per round in 2008-09, good for fourth lowest in the conference. He had a pair of top 10 finishes, including a fifth-place finish at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate with a 221 (79-69-73). Ross posted nine rounds of par-or-better this season and 41 rounds in his distinguished career. The MAC's 2006 Freshman of the Year, Ross is also ranked 243rd according to the Golfweek/Sagarin system.
One of the best golfers in school history, Ross has recorded three top five showings and eight top 10 finishes. In 144 career rounds, he posted a career average of 74.0 and a record 1,864-907 in his four-year career.
EMU head coach Bruce Cunningham will accompany Ross to the regional.
