EMU's seventh inning rally falls just short to Zips

AKRON, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team managed to out-hit the host University of Akron, 10-6, but it was not enough as the Eagles fell 3-2 to the Zips, Sunday, April 5 at Lee R. Jackson Field. The Eagles were down 3-0 at the top of the seventh but could only put two runs on the board in the final frame, as the rally fell just short.
AKRON, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team managed to out-hit the host University of Akron, 10-6, but it was not enough as the Eagles fell 3-2 to the Zips, Sunday, April 5 at Lee R. Jackson Field. The Eagles were down 3-0 at the top of the seventh but could only put two runs on the board in the final frame, as the rally fell just short.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 13-22 (1-7 MAC) on the year while Akron improves to 21-13 (4-3 MAC). EMU totaled 10 hits on the afternoon, led by sophomore Lauren Delapaz's (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) 3-for-3 performance with an RBI. Freshman Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) also went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Green and White. Sophomore pitcher Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) pitched 6.0 innings in the loss, moving her record to 8-8 on the year. She gave up three runs on six hits while striking out one batter.
Entering the seventh inning trailing by a score of 3-0, the Eagles began to rally. Kaylee Tolliver (Amanda, Ohio-Amanda Clearcreek) led off the frame with a single, being replaced by Jessica Patterson (Ionia, Mich.-Ionia) as a pinch runner. Caro, in her first plate appearance of the day, then doubled to score Patterson and cut the Akron lead to 3-1. With Caro on third, Delapaz delivered an RBI single, bringing the Eagles within a single run. Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) then lined into a double play, bringing the Eagles back to the top of the order with only one out remaining. McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) singled to give the Eagles new life, but Gerber popped up to first base, ending the game.
The Eagles are back in action Tuesday, April 7, when they host Oakland University in a doubleheader at Varsity Field at 3 p.m. EMU President Sue Martin will be in attendance, throwing out a ceremonial first pitch at the game.
