NASHPORT, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team has nearly assured itself of at least its third consecutive runner-up finish at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championship at the par 72, 6,147-yard Longaberger Golf Club.

Head coach Sandy Wagner's squad entered the day in second place, and left the course following Saturday's round in that same position. The Eagles carded a third round 314 for a two-day cumulative score of 954 (333-307-314). Tournament leader Kent State University continued its solid play with a 312 for a 925 (304-309-312) and the 29-stroke advantage heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.

The Golden Flashes and the Eagles will joined by Western Michigan in the final five threesomes of Sunday's round. The Broncos trailed the Eagles by 14 strokes heading into the third round, but struggled with a 329 today for a 983 (333-321-329 ) as the deficit grew to 29 strokes. Rounding out the field in order are Akron (330-325-329=984) in fourth, Toledo 334-331-325=990) in fifth, Ball State (342-323-331=996) sixth, Ohio (332,350-325=1007) seventh, Northern Illinois (367-331-338=1036) eighth and Bowling Green (368-348-346=1062) ninth.

Individually, KSU's Mercedes Germino still holds the lead with a 228 (73-75-80) followed by teammate Kirby Dreher in second place with a 230 (79-76-75). Kent State's Maddi Swaney is third with a 233 (77-79-77)

All five Eagles are ranked in the top 20 included senior Stephany Fleet (Dewitt. Mich.-Dewitt) who moved into fourth place with a 75 for a total of 234 (84-75-75). Fleet's round of 75 was tied for the lowest of the day as gusty conditions plagued the course. Sophomore Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) and senior Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) are tied for seventh with at 238. Junior Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Ouebec-Therese-Martin) notched a 249 (88-81-80) to move into a tie for 15th place and sophomore Stephanie Bevington (Ossosso, Mich.-Owosso) added a 250 (83-82-85) for 18th.

The fourth and final round of the 2009 MAC Women's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Sunday, April 26, at 8 a.m. Following competition MAC Golfer, Freshman, Coach and Sportswomen of the Year, First and Second Team All-MAC and the All-Tournament team will be announced.
