Men’s Track Produces Four NCAA Regional Qualifiers at the Sea Ray Relays

Brent, Karanja, Vollmar and Gersham all qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—The Eastern Michigan University men's track team had and outstanding four-day meet at the 2009 Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee April 8-11. The Eagles had four individuals hit NCAA Regional qualifying marks.

David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic), Gerald Gersham (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield), Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) and Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) all earned NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying standards in their respective events. Brent ran a time of 3:45.70 in the 1,500-meter run to finish second, while Gersham tossed 55-07.50 to finish eighth in the shot put. Karanja and Vollmar finished three-four in the steeplechase with times of 8:59.06 and 9:01.83, respectively.

The Eagles had several top finishes in the relay events. The distance medley relay team of Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe), Nate Blackwell (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Central), Blake Figgins (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and Brent took second with a time of 9:55.07 to finish second. Neal Naughton (Walled Lake, Mich.-Western), Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale), Sanseverino and Brent combined to take second in the 4x1,500-meters.

The quartet of Clint Allen (Muskegon, Mich-Orchard View), Koleon Prescott (Oakland, Calif-Merritt College), Ackeem Forde (Haynesville, Barbados-Cambridge & Parry) and Blackwell placed third in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:26.68.

In other individual events, Naughton was second in the invitational section of the 5,000 meters, clocking in with a time of 14:26:25. Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Portage) finished in sixth in that event with a time of 14:45.72. In the 10,000 meters Luke Chrusciel (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) took fourth, running 31:05.40) and in the long jump, Oliver Walther (Erfurt, Germany-Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium) placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 23-00.00.

The Eagles will return home for their only home meet of the outdoor season, hosting the EMU Twilight April 17-18. Eastern Michigan will also be honoring the Pioneers of EMU Track & Field/Cross Country, celebrating the history of the program prior to Eastern's entrance into the Mid-American Conference.
