YPSILANTI
, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped both games of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader to the visiting Ball State Cardinals, falling 6-0 and 3-2, March 28 at Varsity Field. The Eagles were down 3-0 in the second game before rallying to get within a run, 3-2, but could not complete the rally.

With the losses, EMU falls to 11-18 (1-3 MAC) while Ball State improves to 13-14 (3-1 MAC). The Eagles fell victim to three costly errors in the first game, leading to four unearned runs. The Cardinals were able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead after one frame and did not look back en route to a 6-0 win.

Sophomore Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) was charged with the loss, giving up six runs, two earned, on 13 hits while striking out six. The Green and White were quiet at the plate, totaling only five hits, compared to 13 for the Cards. Junior Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) went 2-for-3 at the plate, the only Eagle batter to record more than one hit.

The Eagles found themselves down 3-0 in the second contest before rallying in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs. McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) singled up the middle before Jessica Richards (Canton, Ohio-Jackson) drew a walk to put two runners on. Heather Han (Lafayette, Ind.-McCutcheon) then walked, giving Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak, Mich.-Burr Oak) a chance with the bases loaded. The freshman did not disappoint, singling up the middle to plate two runs and bring the home team within a run, 3-2.

EMU had a chance to close the gap in the sixth, putting runners on second and third with only one out. The Eagles could not cash in on the opportunity, as Russ struck out and Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) grounded out to third base to end the inning.

Junior pitcher Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) went the distance in the circle, moving to 2-11 on the year. Hletko gave up three runs, two earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts. EMU once again struggled offensively, totaling only five hits.

The Eagles are back in action Wednesday, April 1, when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on IPFW. The Mastodons and Eagles are set for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
