Box Score.

KENT, Ohio –
Despite an impressive performance by sophomore pitcher Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London), the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped its second Mid-American Conference meeting this season, as Kent State University edged out EMU, 6-1, at Schoonover Stadium.

Chaffins was stellar in just his second start of the season, as he fanned nine KSU batters over seven innings, giving up three runs on four hits and walking three batters in the game. Kyle Smith was equally impressive for KSU, as he struck out eight Eagles in six innings of work, giving up one run on just two hits to pick up the victory.

EMU drops to 3-17 (0-2 MAC) with the loss, while KSU improves to 12-4 (2-0 MAC) with the win.

The Golden Flashes managed to put the first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, as a two-out RBI single through the left side by Brad Winter scored Jason Patton to give KSU a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) tallied EMU's first hit of the game in the top of the sixth, as his triple to left center off Kyle Smith gave the Eagles a runner in scoring position with no outs. The Eagles quickly cashed in, as freshman Kyle Klein (Grand Rapids, Mich.-West Catholic) grounded out to first base to score Ohrman and make it a 1-1 game.

The Eagles threatened later in the inning, as a single by junior Aaron Crooks (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) and walks to senior Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) and junior Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) loaded the bases for sophomore Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley). But Smith was able to get out of the jam to limit EMU to a one run inning, keeping the score knotted at 1-1.

But the Golden Flashes reclaimed the lead an inning later, as Winter belted an RBI double off the right field wall to score Anthony Gallas to give KSU a 2-1 advantage. The Golden Flashes tallied four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The KSU pitching staff managed to keep EMU's bats at bay in the ninth to seal the win and hand the Eagles the loss.

EMU and KSU wrap up their last regular season meeting of the season tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Schoonover Stadium.
