Freshman McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. The reigning MAC West Player of the Week also hit the first home run of her career, a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
The Crimson jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Eagles would score five unanswered runs to record the victory. EMU put its first run on the board in the third inning, with Russ leading off with a double to left center. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) singled to third baseman, scoring Russ.
The Eagles were able to score two more runs in the fourth frame, as Russ's two-run homer homer to center pushed the EMU advantage to 3-1. The Green and White plated another two runs in the fifth inning off two wild pitches to preserve the 5-1 win.
The Eagles continue action in the Highlander Classic tomorrow, taking on Toledo at noon before ending round robin play against the host school Radford at 4 p.m.
