LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On the second day of action at the Courtyard by Marriott Cardinal Tournament, the Eastern Michigan University softball team defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago, 8-4, before falling to No. 22/17 Ohio State University, 11-0 in five innings. The Eagles are now 7-10 on the season.
In the first game of the day, the Eagles doubled up the UIC Flames en route to an 8-4 win. Both teams put three runs on the board in the second inning but EMU exploded for a four-run sixth inning to record the victory. The Eagles also plated another run in the seventh to complete the scoring. Freshman McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) went 3-for-4 with a career-best four RBI at the plate, while sophomore Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Allison Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) picked up the win, pitching 3.1 innings of relief while giving up one run on one hit while striking out three.
The Eagles then fell to the No. 22/17 Buckeyes in the second contest of the day, 11-0 in five innings. EMU kept OSU off the board for the first two innings before giving up a run in the top of the third. That was all the momentum the Buckeyes needed, as they put another four runs up in the fourth and six markers in the fifth inning to record the win. EMU did not record a hit in the contest as Lindsay Bodeker pitched a no-hitter for Ohio State. Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) was charged with the loss, pitching 3.1 innings while giving up five runs, only one earned, while striking out four.
The Eagles conclude the tournament tomorrow, March 15, against Ohio State at 10 a.m.
