Eagles Pick Up Second Win at USF Tournament

TAMPA, Fla.- Behind a five-run second inning, the Eastern Michigan University softball recorded its second win of the season, defeating Florida A&M University, 6-4, as part of the USF “The Game” Tournament. With the win, EMU moves to 2-1 on the young season.

Sophomore Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) picked up her first win of the 2009 campaign, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up four runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Junior Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless, relief, striking out one batter while giving up one hit.

The Eagles did their damage in the second inning, putting five runs on the board to take a commanding lead. Sophomore Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) doubled down the left field line, scoring when Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) knocked a two-run single down the left field line to give EMU a 2-0 lead. Freshman McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) then tripled to center field to score another two runs in the second frame. The Eagles were able to tack on another run in the inning, taking a 5-0 lead.

After giving up four runs to the Rattlers in the fourth inning, the Eagles were able to add another run in the sixth when Skodinski ripped a double down the left field line to score Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe), who singled earlier in the inning.

For the game, the Eagles totaled nine hits with Skodinski going 3-for-4, Scherer going 2-for-4 and Heather Han (Lafayette, Ind.-McCutcheon) going 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Eagles conclude the USF “The Game” Tournament tomorrow, Feb. 22, with a 9:30 contest against Louisville.
