EMU drops first game of 2009

, Fla.- The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its first game of the 2009 campaign, falling to the University of South Florida, 5-0, in the second game of the USF “The Game” Tournament. The Eagles are now 1-1 on the season.
 
Freshman Allison Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) picked up the loss in the circle for EMU pitching five innings, giving up five runs on five hits. Freshman Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak, Mich.-Burr Oak) came on in relief, giving up one hit in two innings of work.
 
The Eagles managed only three hits in the contest, with sophomore Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) going 2-for-3 at the plate. Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) was the only other Eagle to record a hit.
 
The Bulls put a run on the board in the first inning and three in the second frame en route to the win. The Eagles mounted a comeback in the seventh inning, putting two runners on base with no outs. The next three batters were unable bring the runners home, giving South Florida the win.

EMU continues the tournament tomorrow, Feb. 21, against Florida A&M. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
