YPSILANTI, Mich. –
Behind strong performances from sophomore Heather Qualls (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva)  and junior Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ont.-Widdifield), the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team didn't disappoint in the Second Annual Beauty and the Beast Sunday night, Feb. 15, as the Eagles edged Ball State University, 193.325-191.900, at Bowen Field House.

EMU improves to 4-3 (3-1 MAC) with the win, while BSU drops to 1-5 (0-4 MAC) with the loss.

Qualls carded the high mark of the meet for the Eagles, as her 9.800 on the bars was a career-high and gave EMU early momentum against the Cardinals.

Grigg tallied solid marks in each event, carding a 9.750 on the vault, a 9.700 on the bars and beam and a 9.750 in the floor exercise to finish with the top all-around score of the day at 38.875.

The Eagles closed the competition with stellar performances in the floor exercise, as freshman Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.-Brantford Collegiate Inst.) notched a team-best and career-high 9.775, while junior Mickayla Balow (Blaine, Minn.-Spring Lake Park) carded a 9.750 to help seal the victory for the Eagles.

Seniors Maureen Moss (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren, Township), Stefanie James (West Windsor, N.J.-WW- -P North), Monica Lucas (Winston-Salem, N.C.-Reynolds) and Duyen Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ont.-DelaSalle) were honored and presented with gifts by their teammates after the win. The seniors have one more home competition this season, the Eagle Invitational March 7.

The Eagles now travel to Seattle, Wash. from Feb. 22-27 for three competitions. The Eagles compete in the Washington Invitational Saturday, Feb. 21, hosted by the University of Washington. Along with the Eagles and Huskies, the No. 10 Oregon State University Beavers and No. 17 University of Illinois Fighting Illini will be in action. After the Washington Invitational, EMU will take on the Falcons of Seattle Pacific University Feb. 24 and 27.
