YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team did not disappoint in its home opener today, Feb. 1, as the Eagles registered a 192.925-190.050 victory over the visiting Falcons of Bowling Green State University.
EMU improves to 2-1 (2-1 MAC) with the win, while BGSU drops to 1-3 (1-2 MAC) with the loss.
After being named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week this past week, junior gymnast Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ont.-Widdifield) carded impressive marks against Falcons, including a 9.775 on the bars, a 9.750 on the vault, a 9.100 in the floor exercise, and an 8.450 on the balance beam to finish with an all-around score of 37.075.
Senior gymnast Duyen Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ont.-DelaSalle) had the high mark of the afternoon, carding a 9.800 on the bars to lead the Eagles to a 48.675-47.875 advantage in the event.
Senior Maureen Moss (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren, Township) and sophomore Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) put up stellar marks in the win, as each tallied a 9.775 on the balance beam, while freshman gymnast Tracie Tamashiro (Honolulu, Hawaii-Kalani) tallied a 9.725 on the beam in her first collegiate competition.
The Eagles will be back in action again Friday, Feb. 6, when they head down the road to Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the Michigan Classic, hosted by the University of Michigan. Along with the Eagles and Wolverines, Michigan State University, Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University will compete. The Eagles placed third at last year's Michigan classic, while MSU finished second and U-M took home the title. The meet is set for 7:30 p.m. at Crisler Arena. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and senior citizens.
