YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team rolled to an easy 108-24 win over Rochester College on Education Day here in the Convocation Center Wednesday, Dec. 9. A crowd of 2,039 fans and local elementary and middle school students attended the game as guest of the University.
Led by a record-setting day by sophomore guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford), Eastern started the game on a 33-2 run before pushing the score to 53-11 at halftime. James would finish the contest with 39 points, breaking the single-game EMU scoring record held by Laurie Byrd at 37, Dec. 12, 1981, versus Miami. James also set the Convocation Center record for field goals in a game (16).
The Warriors would need more than 18 minutes to break double digits, as the smothering defense of EMU forced 23 first-half turnovers and limited Rochester to just 11 points on just 4-of-23 shooting. The Warriors would not score again until 8:13 into the second half as Eastern went on a 30-0 run to close out the first half and open the second.
Five players scored in double figures for the Eagles. Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) scored 13, Chenise Miller (Oak Park, Mich.-West Bloomfield) added 12, De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) pitched in with 11, while Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) contributed 10.
The team's second leading scorer, junior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) did not attempt a shot or a free throw in the contest, but contributed eight assists and five rebounds.
The Eagles set or tied records for most field goal attempts at the Convocation Center (82), most points scored (108), lowest opponent field goal percentage (.182), most points in a game by an Eastern player (James, 39) and made field goals in a game at the Convocation Center by a player (16).
The Eagles will take a 12-day break from the hardwood before they travel to Illinois to take on Chicago State University Dec. 21. Tipoff time is 7 p.m.
