Toledo Escapes with a 3-2 Victory Over EMU

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team pushed the University of Toledo to the brink, however, the Rockets were able to escape with the 3-2 (17-25,25-22,25-19,15-25,16-18 ) Mid-American Conference victory Saturday evening here at Savage Arena. The five-set thriller was the seventh of the season for the Eagles and the sixth match that ran the distance in league play.
Toledo improves it record to 16-10 overall and 7-7 in the MAC, as Eastern Michigan sees it season tally fall to 5-25 and 4-10 in conference action.
As had been the case for the majority of the season, freshman Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) paced the EMU attack with a match-high 19 kills to go along with 16 digs on the defensive end. Senior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) turned in 13 markers and Jennifer Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) finished with 12 put-a-aways and seven block assists. Four Eagles tallied double figures in digs led by sophomore libero Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monore St. Mary's Catholic Central) at 28.
For the Midnight Blue and Gold, Amber DeWeerdt notched a double-double with 20 digs and 14 kills followed by Stephanie Kersting with 11 markers. Bailey Blank and Liz Sundburg were the only other Rockets to reach double-digits in kills with 10 each.
Eastern Michigan returns home for the final time in the regular season this weekend, Nov. 13-14. Northern Illinois University invades the Convocation Center Friday, Nov. 13, before the West Division leading Broncos of Western Michigan University come calling Saturday, Nov. 14. Both matches are slated for a 7 p.m. start. Following the WMU match, head coach Kim Berrington will honor her two seniors Randolph and Kim Jarzynka (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Baldwin).
