YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan women's soccer team advanced to the 2009 Mid-American Conference Semifinals by recording its 10th shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over Kent State at Scicluna Field Sunday, Nov. 1.
The second-seeded Eagles (11-3-6) dominated the match from start to finish, getting several opportunities early while denying Kent State the few chances they had in the first half. EMU posted 10 shots in each half and on their final blast of the opening period, Ashley Rodrigues was able to get the home team on the board.
With just two seconds remaining, Rodrigues broke free of her defender and made the most of her clear shot with just the keeper to beat. She snuck it under the out-stretched hand of a diving Kelly Sherwood to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the break. For the senior, it was her league-leading ninth goal of the season to go with another league-best, 19 points.
In the second half, the defense really shined. Kelly Poppaw, Jessica Thomas, Katie Marsh, Julie Kaim and goalkeeper Monique Budani anchored a back line that turned away the Golden Flashes all day. Budani made seven saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
In the 81st minute, Chelsea Detrick took a pass from Paige Sheridan and snuck a shot inside the left post to put the Eagles up 2-0, making a game that wasn't all that close a little more comfortable. For Detrick, it was her fifth goal of the season and first since she scored the game-winner in the Eagles' first meeting with Kent State back on Oct. 4.
Providing the last bit of insurance was Sheridan, who tacked on the third and final goal with less than a minute remaining in regulation. She received a nice lead pass from Carissa Wilson, side-stepped the keeper and scored the empty-netter for her fourth goal of the season.
The Eagles will face No. 6 Miami in the MAC Tournament Semifinals next Friday, Nov. 6 after the Redhawks upset host No. 3 Akron, 2-0, Sunday. The match will be played in Mount Pleasant on the campus of Central Michigan University after the top-seeded Chippewas edged out No. 8 Western Michigan, 1-0, Sunday in other quarterfinal action.
Start times for MAC Tournament Semifinal action have yet to be announced. Check back at EMUEagles.com during the week for more information.
