BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team's struggles continued Friday night, Oct. 16, in the "House the Roars", as the Eagles dropped a 3-2 (25-17, 20-25, 18-25, 25-17, 8-15) Mid-American Conference decision to Bowling Green State University. The Eagles was led by junior Jennifer Swartz (Canton, Mich. -Westland John Glenn) with a season-best 19 kills and a .405 attack percentage at venerable Anderson Arena on the campus of BGSU.
With the loss Eastern Michigan drop to 3-20 overall and 2-5 in league action. Meanwhile the Falcons snap their 11-match losing streak and pick up their first MAC win (8-14, 1-6 MAC). Additionally, the Bowling Green victory continued the Falcons's recent dominance of Eastern Michigan, as EMU has not defeated BGSU since Nov. 18, 2005, in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio.
As a team, the Eagles hit .218 for the match with 53 total kills and 16 errors in 37 total attempts. The Falcons also hit well, finishing with 68 kills and 27 errors for a .211 hitting percentage. Bowling Green was led in the match by Kaitlin Jackson who finished with 17 kills and 19 digs.
Eastern came out of the shoot hot to take the early 1-0 edge with a 25-17 set victory. However, the Falcons clawed back to take the next two frames, 25-20 and 25-18. Head Coach Kim Berrington's crew rallied to force a deciding fifth set with a 25-17 win by notching a .323 hitting percentage in the set, but in the finale it was all Falcons capturing the match by a 15-8 advantage.
Eastern Michigan remains on the road Saturday, Oct. 17, with a contest at Miami University. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio.
