YPSILANTI, Mich.-The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team swept its dual meet between Central Michigan University, the University of Oakland and the University of Detroit Friday evening, Jan. 30, at Bob Parks Track in Bowen Field House. The Eagles beat the Chippewas, 83-57, the Grizzlies, 100-38, and the Titans, 93-47.
The Eagles picked up wins in eight events, including the 800-meter run, the mile run, the 3,000 meters, the 60-meter hurdles, the high jump, long jump, triple jump and shot put.
Bringing home victories for the Eagles included David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic) in the 800, Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) in the mile, Gerald Gersham (Southfield, Mich.-Lane College) in the shot, Xavier Clais (Paris, France) in the high jump, Oliver Walther (Erfurt, Germany- Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium) in the long and triple jump, Tymell Dodd (Lansing, Mich.-Sexton) in the hurdles and Cole Sanseverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) in the 3,000. Brent, Karanja, Sanseverino, Dodd and Walther all set season bests, while both Brent 's time of 1:51.41 in the 800 and Karanja's time of 4:09.14 lead the Mid-American Conference heading into the weekend.
The Eagles recorded several other top performances throughout the evening. Ackeem Forde (Haynesville, Barbados-Cambridge & Parry) sprinted to second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.53 seconds, while Nate Blackwell (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Central) was second in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 49.04 seconds, just one one-hundreth of a second off of first place. Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) also finished a the two spot, this time in the mile, running the second-fastest time in the mile run in the conference this season (4:11.41) behind teammate Karanja. Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Portage) was second in the 3,000.
After winning the high jump, Clais switched gears, slightly, and finished second in the long and triple jump, the first time he had competed in either in his collegiate career at EMU.
Gersham also had a successful night in two events. Not only did he win the shot, but he also threw a career best 54-05.50 in the weight throw to finish second.
The Eagles, with their final home meet under their belt, will hit the road for the two-day Meyo Invitational Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8.
