FOR THE 112th TIME: The 2008-09 season is the 112th of intercollegiate basketball for the Eastern Michigan University Eagles. Eastern played its first season in 1897-98 and split games with Detroit, losing a 2-0 decision before coming back for a 4-0 victory. The 2008-09 season will also be the 35th for the Eagles in the Mid-American Conference. The first year of MAC play for EMU was 1974-75 when the then-Hurons went 12-14 overall and 4-9 in league play. EMU has won three Mid-American Conference titles: 1987-88, 1990-91, and 1995-96, and the Green and White captured MAC Tournament crowns in all three of those years in addition to winning the tournament title in 1997-98.
EMU AND CMU: EMU enters Tuesday's, Jan. 13, home game against Central Michigan looking to even its Mid-American Conference record at 1-1. The Eagles, now 2-13 overall, lost its league opener Saturday, Jan. 10, when Ball State held the Eagles to just 42 points in a 46-42 loss to the visitors. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) continues to lead the Eagles with a 15.8 scoring average and a 6.5 rebound mark. Junior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) is averaging 10.7 points and 5.1 rebounds.
CMU has a 3-10 overall record and a 0-1 MAC mark. The Chippewas dropped a 72-63 decision to Western Michigan Sunday, Jan. 11, in their league opener.
THE SERIES: EMU and CMU have met 174 times on the hardcourt and Central holds a 92-82 edge in the series. The two teams split last year with Central recording a 62-53 win in Mt. Pleasant, Jan. 6, and EMU coming back to take a 67-64 decision in Ypsilanti. Eastern has won nine of the last 12 battles with Central.
COOPER TURNS IN A CAREER BEST: EMU redshirt sophomore Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing-Bridgton (Maine) Academy) came up with the best offensive game of his career Saturday, Jan. 3, at Chicago State with a career-best 16 points. Cooper made 8-of-9 field goals and added eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block. He also came up with several high-flying dunks in the game.
REACHING 600/300: Junior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) is the 72nd player in EMU history to reach the 600-point plateau with 617 heading into the Central Michigan game, Jan. 13, 2009. Dobbins has played in 71 games, starting 58 times, and his 617 points is good for 69th in EMU history and his 316 rebounds is ranked 59th.
BOWDRY MOVES UP: Despite playing in just 47 games in his career, redshirt sophomore Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman), is climbing the EMU career points and rebound ladder at a brisk pace. Bowdry, who has started in 42 of the 47 games in which he has played, is currently 88th on the EMU career scoring list with 503 points and his 270 career rebounds is 66th.
SCORING DROUGHT: EMU suffered through one of its weakest offensive outputs in recent history, scoring just 42 points in a 46-42 setback to Ball State Saturday, Jan. 10. That 42-point effort tied the EMU Convocation Center mark for futility. The other 42-point total came Jan. 9, 1999, in a 59-42 loss to, who else, Ball State.
