Volleyball Falls to Ball State, 3-1

Cardinals hit .234 to just .007 for the Eagles

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (20-25, 12-25, 25-23, 13-25) decision Saturday evening, Sept. 27, to Ball State University. The Eagles struggled offensively, hitting just . 007 compared to .234 for the Cardinals.
The Eagles are now 6-10 overall and 1-1 in Mid-American Conference action, while the Cardinals rise to 5-10, while evening their league mark at one.
Junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) led the Eagles, putting together her second consecutive double-double with 13 kills and digs. Sophomore Jennifer Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) chipped in eight kills of her own.
For the Cardinals, three players had double digit kills, including 15 from Elaina Kakatolis, 12 from Julie Breivogel and 11 from Alisha Green. Breivogel also registered 14 digs.
The Eagles found themselves in hole early in set one, unable to break a tie or Ball State lead until a service ace by Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC) tied the score at 10 and a kill by Randolph gave the Green and White the one point advantage. After trading several points, the Eagles found themselves up by five, 19-14, until the Cardinals put together an eight-point run to put the home team up 22-19. The Eagles were unable to hold on as BSU took the first set, 25-20.
Set two was much of the same for the Eagles, who struggled to hit, going -.121. The Cards built a five-point lead, 13-8, before going on six point run to increase the advantage to 10 points. The Green and White added two more, but fell by a score of 25-12 for the set.
Eastern and Ball State battled back and forth for several points in set three, knotting the score nine times before the Eagles were able to take their first lead of the set at the 14-13 mark. EMU added two more points before the Cards added another score to the board. The Eagles had their largest lead of the set, 21-16, before the Cardinals climbed back to tie the score at 22, but EMU hung on to win, 25-23.
Unable to find their groove, the Eagles fell behind in set four as the Cardinals put together several runs to take the 25-13 set win.
The Eagles will return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center to host a pair of West Division rivals in Western Michigan University and Northern Illinois, Oct. 3-4. The Friday night match up against the Broncos will begin at 7 p.m., while the Saturday afternoon tilt will start at 3 p.m.
