Eagles open Mid-American Conference play with a win

Box score.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Eastern Michigan University head volleyball coach Kim Berrington joined some select company Friday evening at St. Ursula Academy. Berrington captured her 300th career victory as the Eagles swept the University of Toledo, 3-0 (25-22, 30-28, 34-32), to open Mid-American Conference play.

In 17 years of coaching, Berrington has posted a 300-253 record, including a 197-178 mark in 13 years as the head coach at EMU. Prior to coming to Eastern Michigan, Berrington recorded a 103-76 mark in four years at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Mich.

With tonight’s victory, the Eagles rise to 6-9 overall on the season and 1-0 in league action. On the opposite side of the ledger, the Rockets fall to 8-6 and 0-1 in MAC play.

Leading the way for the Eagles offensively was junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) and senior Jill Wolosiansky (Uniontown, Ohio-Green). Randolph collected a double-double, finishing with 14 kills, 13 digs and a .308 hitting percentage. Wolosiansky recorded double-digit kills with 10, on her way to hitting .364. Freshman Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) chipped in 40 assists and seven digs. Junior Kim Jarzynka (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Baldwin) had a team-best 18 digs on the evening.

The Eagles and Rockets battled back-and-forth to open set one, knotting the score five times before the Green and White took an 8-7 edge. EMU continued to build its lead by going on an 8-3 run to put its advantage to seven, 17-10. Rockets climbed back, going on a four-point run of their own, before a Toledo error gave the Eagles another score. The two teams tied the score two more times before the Eagles took the set, 25-22.

EMU opened with a 6-2 lead in the second set, but the Rockets remained close, eventually coming to within one, 8-7. The two teams traded points before tying the score at 12. The home team was able to build a 16-12 edge, before a Randolph kill to the back corner of the court sparked a three-point run by the Eagles, cutting the deficit to one, 16-15. EMU and Toledo traded scores over the next few plays before the Green and White once again cut the Rocket lead to one, 21-20 following another Randolph kill. Following another UT point, a kill by Randolph and Wolosiansky knotted the score at 22. The Eagles and Rockets continued to exchange scores several more times, tying the set four times. With the Eagles down, 28-27, a huge tip-kill by Mason tied the score for the Eagles before a service ace by Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC) and a kill by Randolph gave EMU the 30-28 set win.

The third set was much of the same, as the Eagles and Rockets battled back-and-forth for scores. EMU took an early 8-4 lead and held on to it until the Rockets tied the set at 18. The Eagles and Rockets knotted the score 12 more times before the Eagles took the 34-32 set edge.

The Eagles return to action Saturday, Sept. 27, traveling to Muncie, Ind. to continue MAC action against the Ball State University Cardinals. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
