EMU scores three second-half goals to notch first win of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team used a strong second half offense, scoring three goals in the second frame, to defeat the IPFW Mastodons, 3-0, Friday, Aug. 29 at Scicluna Field.
The Eagles picked up their first win of the year, improving to 1-0-1, while IPFW remains winless at 0-2-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) notched her first shutout of the season, collecting one save. EMU had 13 shots, including six on-goal, compared to just six total shots for IPFW.
Neither team could find the offense in the first half, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie after the first 45 minutes of action. The Eagles totaled five shots during the first frame but were unable to come away with a score.
The teams picked up the pace offensively in the second half, as both sides saw shots hit the cross bar early in the half, with neither finding the back of the net. The Eagles struck first when Katie Lozar (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Brecksville) scored off a free kick from Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi), putting the Eagles on top, 1-0 with a little over 30 minutes to play in the game.
EMU put another score on the board late in the second half to take a comfortable two-goal lead when freshman Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe) netted the first goal of her career with less than 10 minutes in the game. The Eagles were not done scoring, as Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) scored her second goal of the season with four minutes remaining, ensuring the Eagles of the 3-0 victory.
The Eagles are back in action Tuesday, Sept. 2 when they travel to Detroit to take on the Titans of Detroit-Mercy. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Titan Soccer Field.
