EMU scored two unanswered goals to force overtime
YPSILANTI, Mich. — After falling behind 2-0, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team scored two unanswered goals to force overtime, evenutally tying the University of Michigan, 2-2, Sunday, Aug. 24, at Scicluna Field. Junior Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) found the back of the net with only :33 seconds remaining, forcing the game to overtime.
EMU is now 0-0-1 on the young season, while U-M moves to 0-1-1. The Wolverines totaled 14 shots in the match, including seven on-goal. The Eagles only had two shot on goal, netting both tries.
The first half was an offensive struggle, as the teams went almost 20 minutes after the start without a shot. Michigan found the back of the net off a corner kick, but the goal was waved off after a Wolverine foul was called. The game hit halftime scoreless, with the teams combining for only five shots in the opening 45 minutes.
U-M struck quickly after halftime, scoring off a corner kick by Kelsey Rogind. Rogind fired her shot in front of the goal, finding Amy Klippert for the score, only five minutes into the second frame. The Wolverines wasted no time adding to their lead, as Rogind and Klippert combined for another goal, just seven minutes later.
The Eagles stayed persistent despite the two-goal deficit, answering back with a goal of their own less than a minute later. Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford II) found a streaking Ashley Rodrigues (Pickering, Ont.-St. Mary’s Catholic) across the middle, cutting the U-M deficit to one, 2-1.
Just when it seemed like Michigan was going to escape with a 2-1 victory, Kinter scored her first goal since 2006 to even the score. Kinter and Michigan goalkeeper Madison Gates were in a foot race to the ball, with Kinter escaping with possession. With Gates on the ground, Kinter fired from about 20 yards out, hitting the back of the net with only :33 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Neither team could get much of anything going in the first overtime session, sending the game to another extra frame. Michigan had two opportunities to score in the second overtime, but were unable to come away with a goal.
The Eagles are next in action, Friday, Aug. 29, at 5 p.m., when they host IPFW at Scicluna Field.
