YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered its second loss in as many days, falling 9-5 today, April 8, to Saginaw Valley State here at Oestrike Stadium. The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings and held on for the victory.

Kevin Wammes (Fremont, Ohio-St. Joseph) was charged with the loss, giving up six runs in two innings while striking out one. Wammes (0-1) was among five EMU pitchers that saw action in today’s game. Sean Hoffman (Midland, Mich.-Midland), Dan Puls (Alpena, Mich.-Alpena) and Matt Shoemaker (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) each pitched two innings and recorded two strikeouts. Freshman Jordan Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, Ohio-Ft. Loramie) also pitched an inning for the Green and White, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) and Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston), each with two hits and two RBI on the day.
Rhoad cut the Cardinals lead in half, 2-1, after leading off the game with a walk and then scoring on a Powell double down the left-field line. The Cardinals added four in the second inning to extend its lead to 6-1. In the fifth, Powell again drove in Rhoad, who had reached on a double to left-field, with a triple to left for his second hit and RBI of the game.
EMU added one in the bottom of the seventh, but still trailed 8-3 with two innings remaining. Rhoad’s double down the left-field line in the eighth drove in Aaron Crooks (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) and Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark), closing the gap to 8-5 heading into the ninth.
There in the ninth, SVSU added one in the top half and held on despite allowing two walks in the bottom.
The Eagles continue play tomorrow, April 9, with a single game against Oakland University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
