YPSILANTI, Mich. — Former Eastern Michigan University swimming standout Kevin Doak has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. His time of 57.00 in the 100 backstroke at the Ohio State Grand Prix (April 5) makes him eligible for the Trials, being held June 29-July 6 at the Qwest Center.

To qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, only long course meter (LCM) times are accepted. Converted short course yard (SCY) and short course meter (SCM) times are not acknowledged.

Doak, a native of Brighton, Mich., currently holds four national records in the 25-29 Masters group.  His records include the 50 back SCM (25.15), 100 back SCM (55.65), 50 back SCY (23.01) and 100 backstroke LCM (57:00).

Doak was a letterwinner at Eastern Michigan from 1999-2003. He still holds the EMU varsity record in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 48.51 and is also part of the record holding 200 medley relay team (1:29.48). Doak was a three-time first team All-Mid-American Conference selection, winning 10 titles during his four year career at EMU. He was a member of the MAC Champion 400 medley relay all four years, helping the relay team to titles in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. His 200 medley relay team captured the MAC title in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Individually, he won the 100 backstroke at the MAC meet in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

In order to make his Olympic dream a reality, a group is looking to raise money to send Doak to Omaha. The Perch Fund, created by Brian and Carol Gray, is looking to raise $5,000 by June 1. Checks can be made out to the Perch Fund and sent to:
