YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team got back on track today, winning the second game of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader against the University of Akron here Friday, April 18 at Varsity Field. The Zips won the first contest, 7-3, before the Eagles bounced back to record a 7-1 victory in the second contest.

With the split, EMU moves to 10-23 (2-6 MAC) on the season, while Akron goes to 14-30 (3-9 MAC).

The Eagles won the second game of the twinbill, highlighted by junior catcher Heather Han’s (Lafayette, Ind.-McCutcheon) three-run homer in the second inning, helping the home team record a 7-1 win. Freshman pitcher Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) pitched a complete game, despite taking a hit off her leg early in the game. Caro (6-10) went 7.0 innings while giving up six hits and one earned run. She struck out seven en route to the victory.

UA put a run on the board in the top of the first, but the Eagles answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) doubled to left field to start the inning for EMU. After a sacrifice to move her to third, senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) knocked her in with a double. Han then hit a one-run single to left, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Scherer picked up her second hit of the game when she hit an RBI single up the middle to score freshman Brooke Carpenter (Three Rivers, Mich.-Three Rivers). Following an Akron error, Strauss hit a sacrifice fly to score another run for the Eagles, increasing the score to 4-1. Han was the next batter, hitting her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to give the Eagles a 7-1 lead after two innings. Neither team would score for the rest of the game.

Offensively, the Green and White totaled eight hits, with Scherer and Han both notching two apiece, while Strauss went 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Akron took the first game, after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 game wide open. The Eagles were not able to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Zips a 7-3 win.

The Zips tacked three runs on the board in the third, with the Eagles answering with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. Strauss hit a single up the middle to plate a run, moving freshman Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) to second. Han followed up with a single, scoring Delapaz from second. When the throw from center missed the cut-off, Strauss was able to score as well, knotting the game at 3.

UA took advantage of four Eagle errors in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs to put the game out of reach.  Freshman pitcher Kari Chambers (Woodstock, Ga.-Woodstock) picked up the loss for the Eagles, going 7.0 innings, giving up eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six to move her record to 3-11.

EMU had six hits in the first game, with Strauss going 2-for-3 to lead the way at the plate.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 19 at Varsity Field. EMU will host the Ohio Bobcats in a single game, with first pitch coming at 2 p.m. The game is Alumni Day, with former players returning to Varsity Field to cheer on the Eagles.
