Jenny Scherer hits the 19th homer of her career, good for second all-time
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Behind some strong hitting, including home runs by freshman Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) and sophomore outfielder Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe), the Eastern Michigan University softball team won its second straight Mid-American Conference game, defeating Ohio University, 8-0 here Saturday, April 9 at Varsity Field.
With the win, the Eagles are now 11-23 (3-6 MAC) while Ohio falls to 18-18 (5-8 MAC).
EMU totaled eights hits on the afternoon, with Scherer going 3-for-4 with her eighth home run of the season. Freshman Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) and senior Jessica Grant (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) both notched two hits on the day. Skodinski hit her second homer of the year, a two-run shot to left centerfield.
Freshman pitcher Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) picked up the win in the circle, pitching six innings of shutout ball, notching her third shutout of the season. Caro allowed only four hits while striking out one on the afternoon.
EMU put four runs on the board in the first inning, capped by Skodinski’s two-run blast. Scherer, the lead-off batter for the Eagles, singled to start the game, moving to second after a sacrifice by Delapaz. Senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. Two consecutive passed balls allowed the runners to advance, with Scherer plating the first run of the game. On the play at home, the ball got past the pitcher, allowing Strauss to score another run, putting the home team in front, 2-0. Grant followed up with a single up the middle, scoring on Skodinski’s home run.
Scherer hit the 19th home run of her career in the second, tying her with Melissa Drouillard and Nikki Denman for second on the all-time list.
With the bases loaded in the third, freshman Brooke Carpenter (Three Rivers, Mich.-Three Rivers) hit a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded, scoring Grant who beat out the throw to home. Senior Stephanie Sabo (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park Cabrini) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score another run for the Eagles, pushing the lead to 7-0.
EMU was able to end the game in the sixth inning, with Delapaz singling through the right side, scoring Carpenter, to put the Eagles on top, 8-0.
The Eagles and Bobcats will complete their two-game series tomorrow, April 20 at Varsity Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Sunday’s game is the last contest at Varsity Field for the 2008 season and is also Senior Day, as the Eagles will honor their five seniors before the game.
