No. 4 UCLA and No. 20 SDSU defeat EMU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to No. 4 UCLA, 8-0, and No. 20 San Diego State, 4-3, today at the SDSU Softball Field during the second day of the San Diego Classic.  The Eagles are now 5-11 on the season.

In the first game against UCLA, the Eagles managed only one hit against the nationally ranked Bruins.  Junior Heather Han picked up the lone EMU hit.  On the mound, Jaclyn Caro (3-5) picked up the loss after going 3.1 innings, giving up six hits and five earned runs.  Kari Chambers came on in relief, striking out three in 2.1 innings.

The day did not get any easier for the Eagles, as they faced their second ranked opponent in the Aztecs.  The Eagles held tough, holding a 3-2 lead going into the top of the seventh inning, but SDSU was able to put two runs on the board to record the 4-3 victory.   EMU totaled six hits on the afternoon, led by senior Jessica Grant, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI.  Freshman Lauren Delapaz was 2-for-2, while Ashley Strauss went 1-for-3 with a run scored.  Chambers pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and four earned runs while striking out two.

The Eagles conclude their West Coast trip and play in the San Diego Classic I tomorrow with a 9 a.m. game against Saint Peter’s College.  Following that game, EMU will be off for a few weeks, before taking place in the Ohio State Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, March 21-23.
