Jenny Scherer hits fourth home run of season

EAST LANSING, Mich.Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Michigan State University, here Wednesday, April 2, at Old College Field.  EMU is now 7-13 on the season.

Freshman pitcher Kari Chambers (Woodstock, Ga.-Woodstock) picked up the loss for the Eagles, going 5.0 innings and allowing four earned runs.  Chambers (2-6) gave up six hits, while striking out one.  Offensively, the Eagles totaled five hits on the day, all coming from different players.

Sophomore outfielder Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) got things started for the Eagles in the first inning, belting her fourth homer of the season to stake the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.  EMU put another run on the board in the second when senior outfielder Heather Giroux (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) hit a double over the left fielder’s head, knocking in Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton).

MSU tied it up in the bottom of the fifth off a two-run Nikki Nicosia home run, her fourth in the last three games.  After the Spartans put two runners on base in the sixth, head coach Karen Baird made a pitching change, bringing in freshman Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory).  MSU was able to put another two runs on the board in the inning, taking a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh.

In the seventh, all three Eagle batters grounded out, giving the Spartans the victory.

EMU will open Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a trip to Mount Pleasant to take on Central Michigan.  The Eagles will play Saturday, April 5 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
