Ashley Strauss goes 2-for-3 with a double
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — In a rematch of last season’s Mid-American Conference Championship game, Central Michigan University avenged its earlier loss to beat Eastern Michigan University 2-0, here, April 5, at the CMU Softball Complex. EMU is now 7-14 (0-1 MAC) on the year.
The Eagles struggled to get things going offensively, totaling only four hits on the afternoon. Senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double. Senior outfielder Heather Giroux (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) and junior catcher Heather Han (Lafayette, Ind.-McCutcheon) accounted for the other two hits.
Freshman pitcher Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) picked up the loss on the mound for the Green and White. Caro (4-7) went 6.0 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run, while striking out three on the afternoon.
The Chippewas did their damage in the second inning, scoring both runs. After drawing a walk, Christina Novak stole second. Amy Hudson then hit a double, scoring Novak for the Chips and advancing to third after an error by the Eagles. Brittni Merchant followed up with a single for CMU, scoring Hudson from third, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage.
EMU had a chance in the seventh inning, when Han singled to reach base with one out in the inning. Senior Nicole Prescott (Redford, Mich.-Lee M. Thurston) replaced Han as a pinch runner. Strauss then doubled, advancing to third after Prescott was thrown out at the plate. Senior Jessica Grant (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) then lined out to right field to end the game.
EMU will be back in action tomorrow, April 6, against Central Michigan. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the CMU Softball Complex.
