Senior Ashley Strauss hits her first home run of the season

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to in-state and Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan University, 9-5, here today, April 6, at the CMU Softball Complex.  The Eagles are now 7-15 (0-2 MAC).

EMU totaled seven hits on the afternoon, led by senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton), who went 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs scored.  Senior Jessica Grant (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while freshman Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) knocked in two runs.

Freshman Kari Chambers (Woodstock, Ga.-Woodstock) picked up the loss on the mound, going 2.1 innings, while giving up four hits and four earned runs. Sophomore Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) came on in relief, striking out three.

The Chips struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning to take the early lead.  Strauss brought the Eagles within one in the second inning after hitting her first home run of the year. CMU increased the lead to five, 6-1, after a four-run third inning.

In the seventh, EMU started to rally when Delapaz hit a two-RBI double, to bring the Green and White within four, 9-5.  She advanced to third on an error by the Chips.  Senior Lindsay Ritz (Garden City, Mich.-Garden City) followed that up with a single of her own, scoring Delapaz from third.  The Eagles would get no closer, as CMU would record three consecutive outs to end the game.

The Eagles will next take on Cleveland State in a doubleheader, Tuesday, April 8 at Varsity Field.  The game was originally scheduled for March 25, but was rescheduled due to weather and poor field conditions.  First pitch of the twinbill is set for 3 p.m.
