YPSILANTI, Mich. —The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a doubleheader with Cleveland State University here today, April 8, at Varsity Field. The Eagles won the first game, 3-1, before falling to the Vikings, 5-1 in the nightcap. EMU is now 8-16 (0-2 MAC) on the season.

In the first game, head coach Karen Baird mixed up the batting order, putting sophomore outfielder Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) as the lead-off hitter. The move paid off, as Scherer opened the game with her fifth home run of the season. Senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) added to the Eagle lead in the first inning when she hit her second home run of the season, putting EMU up 2-1 after one inning of play, a lead the Eagles would not lose.

EMU put another run on the board in the sixth inning, when senior outfielder Heather Giroux (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) knocked in senior Lindsay Ritz (Garden City, Mich.-Garden City), who had reached base on an error. For the game, Eastern Michigan totaled seven hits, with Strauss going 3-for-3 in the first game.  Freshman pitcher Kari Chambers (Woodstock, Ga.-Woodstock) picked up the win on the mound, pitching a complete game, while allowing only three hits and one earned run.  She had seven strikeouts on the afternoon for EMU.

The second game was a different story, as Cleveland State was able to register seven hits, after just three in the first game. The Vikings put two on the board in the third inning and never looked back, en route to a 5-1 win.

EMU scored in the sixth inning after junior catcher Heather Han (Lafayette, Ind.-McCutcheon) hit an RBI double to score Scherer, bringing the Eagles within three, 4-1. CSU scored another run in the top half of the seventh and was able to keep the Eagles from rallying. Scherer led the Eagles with two hits in the second game, while four other players recorded a hit.

Sophomore Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) was charged with the loss for the Eagles, going 3.0 innings and giving up two earned runs while striking out three. Freshman Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) came on in relief, going 4.0 innings while allowing three hits and three earned runs. Caro also struck out four on the afternoon.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, April 9, when they travel to Notre Dame, Ind., to take on the Fighting Irish.  The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
