ALBUQUERQUE
, N.M. The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell behind early in the fourth and final game of their series against the University of New Mexico, dropping a 6-3 contest held at Isotopes Park earlier today. The Lobos built a three-run advantage by the sixth inning and did not look back, sweeping the season-opening series from the Eagles.
     
With the loss, the Green and White fall to 0-4, 0-0 MAC on the year while the Lobos improve to 4-0 overall. Leading the way for EMU was Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood), going 2-for-5 on the day with one RBI. Bobby Henderson (Milford, Mich.-Detroit Catholic) pitched seven innings, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in the loss. Ryan Escarcega (1-0) picked up the win for the Lobos, throwing five innings of one hit ball while recording two strikeouts.
     
New Mexico got on the board in the bottom of the second when Anthony Martinez doubled to left field, bringing in Drew McDonald who reached on a double earlier in the inning. Henderson (0-1) worked his way out of the second, getting Brian Cavazos-Galvez to ground out to end the inning.
     
After a scoreless third inning, the Lobos bats sparked again in the bottom of the fourth. Rafael Neda doubled to center, bringing Drew McDonald to push the Lobo lead to 2-0.
     
New Mexico added one more in the bottom of the fifth when Kevin Atkinson’s single to left field drove in Mike Brownstein, bringing to the total to 3-0 in favor of the home team.
     
The Eagles came alive in the top half of the sixth frame, when Rhoad doubled to left field, advancing sophomore Aaron Crooks (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) who reached after being hit by a pitch to lead the inning off. Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) reached on an error, allowing Rhoad and Gulliver to score, closing the gap to 3-2. The Green and White rally ended there, as they left on stranded on base to finish the sixth.
     
UNM broke the game open with a three-run eighth, increasing its lead to 6-2. EMU added one in the top of the ninth on a Rhoad two-out single to left that drove in Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark), cutting the deficit to 6-3.
     
EMU will be in action again Tuesday, Feb. 26, as they travel to Gainesville, Fla., for a two game series with the University of Florida Gators. First pitch Tuesday night is set for 6:30 p.m.
