ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a pair of games to the University of New Mexico, here Saturday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The Eagles took an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth in game one before falling 9-8. In game two, EMU struggled offensively, falling 13-3 to the host Lobos. With the losses, the Eagles fall to 0-3 on the year while UNM moves to 3-0.
Jeff Davis (Avondale, Ariz.-Westview) and Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) lead the way for the Eagles in game one, going a combined 7-9 with six RBIs in game one of the double dip. In game two, Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood), Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park), and Steve Bradshaw (Lapeer, Mich.-West) each posted two hits in a 13-3 loss.
The Green and White jumped on the board early, racking up seven runs after the first three innings. Rhoad homered to start the game, giving the Eagles the early 1-0 lead. After a Gulliver double, Davis singled, knocking in Gulliver and bringing the score to 2-0. Marshall’s two-out single scored Davis, increasing the lead to 3-0.
With two on and no outs in the top of the third, Davis hit his first homer of the year, giving EMU the 6-2 advantage. Freshman Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) drove in Marshall on a fielder’s choice, expanding the Eagles lead to 7-2. The EMU bats cooled off after their hot start while the Lobos heated up and closed the gap over the next five innings. Heading into the ninth with an 8-6 advantage and one out away from their first win of the year, the Eagles allowed New Mexico to plate three runs, winning 9-8.
In the nightcap, New Mexico scored early and often, building a 4-0 lead before the Eagles got on the board in the top of the sixth. UNM answered back and put up two more of their own, taking a 6-2 lead into the seventh. In the top half of the seventh, Skirving homered to right field, bringing the Eagles to within three, 6-3. However, the Lobos again answered in the bottom half of the frame, posting two more runs and increasing their lead to 8-3. After a scoreless top half to the eighth, UNM put the game out of reach, driving in five and increasing their lead to 13-3.
The Eagles complete their series with the Lobos tomorrow, Feb. 24, at Isotopes Park. First pitch is slated for Noon (MT).
