The Eastern Michigan University baseball team opened up its 2008 season with a 16-7 loss at the hands of the University of New Mexico Lobos earlier today at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M. Senior Steve Bradshaw (Lapeer, Mich.-West) lead the way for the Green and White on the day, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Bradshaw’s double to left field in the top of the first drove in Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood), giving the Eagles the early 1-0 advantage. EMU would add another in the first to go up 2-0 on the Lobos. New Mexico battled back in the bottom half of the inning, putting up five runs on five hits to take the 5-2 lead.

UNM increased its lead to 8-2 through three innings. With one out gone in the top of the fourth, junior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) homered to left field, cutting the deficit to five, 8-3. New Mexico tacked on six more through the next three innings, taking a commanding 14-3 lead through six innings of play.

The Eagles offensive made a comeback attempt, notching four runs in the final two innings. In the top of the eighth, junior Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) recorded his first hit of the game, a solo home run, bringing the score to 14-4. After New Mexico added two more in the bottom of the eighth, making the lead 16-4, the Green and White offense again came alive. Junior Jim Guilliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) walked to start the inning. Bradshaw stepped up and collected his third hit of the day, a two-run home run.

A Jeff Davis (Avondale, Ariz.-Westview) triple brought in Mike Boyd, rounding out the scoring in the top of the ninth. For the game the Eagles picked up seven runs on nine hits while the Lobos churned in 16 runs on 18 hits and capitalized on six EMU errors in the game.

Picking up the win was Bobby LaFromboise (1-0), scattering four hits in four innings of work, allowing three earned runs, while Sean Hoffman (Midland, Mich.-Midland) (0-1) took the loss, giving up nine earned runs on 12 hits in four innings of work.
