Catcher led the MAC with 28 runners caught stealing

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University baseball student-athlete Nick Weaver was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Defensive Team, as the conference announced its All-MAC teams and specialty awards Wednesday, May 20.

Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.) led the MAC in runners caught stealing with 28, a number that ranks third nationally and second in EMU program history in the modern statistical era.

"Great catchers change the game without always showing up in the box score," said Interim Head Coach Trevor Beerman. "That's exactly what Nick [Weaver] did for us all season. His leadership, toughness, and defensive instincts gave our team confidence every time he stepped behind the plate. Being named to the all-defensive team is a well-earned honor and I couldn't be prouder of him."

A force behind the plate, the junior caught nearly 30% of the runners attempting to steal this season, throwing them out on 28/95 chances. His 28 runners caught stealing stands four more than the second-highest total in the conference as he caught multiple runners in the same game seven times, with his high watermark being three at Little Rock, Feb. 14, and against Bowling Green, May 2. The three CSB stand second in EMU's single-game leaderboards to Brian Blackburn's four runners caught stealing at Michigan State, April 5, 2006.

In all, Weaver recorded 304 putouts in 357 chances with 47 assists and six errors, totaling a .983 fielding percentage to go with his 28 runners caught stealing. He contributed offensively as well, batting .250 with 37 hits, nine doubles, three home runs, 19 RBI, and 17 runs. He also worked 14 walks and was a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts.

The Streamwood, Ill., native becomes the third All-MAC Defensive Team selection in program history, joining 2022 MAC Player of the Year, Matt Kirk (OF), and Zachary Owings, who got the nod as a third baseman in 2018.
