YPSILANTI, Mich.- After falling behind by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball relied on an attacking defense, rallying to defeat the Siena College Saints in overtime, 68-54, Monday, Nov. 24 at the Convocation Center.

With the win, the Eagles even their record at 2-2 while Siena remains winless at 0-4.
The Saints scored with 3.8 seconds remaining in the contest, forcing overtime. EMU scored the first eight points of the extra session, hanging on for the 14-point win. Freshman Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) led the Eagles with a career-high 25 points, eight rebounds and five steals while Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) notched her second double-double of the season with 14 point and 14 rebounds. Mary Lawson (Alexandria, Va.-West Potomac (Jacksonville)) and Sydney Huntley-Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) also hit double figures, chipping in 10 points each.
EMU forced 28 turnovers on the evening, while committing only 11. The Eagles won the battle of the glass, out-rebounding Siena 52-47. Heather Stec led the way for Siena, scoring 20 points with 12 rebounds while Sarah Fullmer netted 14 points.
EMU opened the second half on a 13-5 run to take their first lead of the evening at 38-36 with 14:49 remaining off a steal and lay-in by Huntley-Rogers. After allowing Siena to knot it again at 38, EMU reeled off 11 straight points to take a 49-38 lead, forcing a Siena timeout with 8:55 to go.
The Eagles struggled offensively out of the gates, hitting only two of their first 20 attempts, falling behind by as many as 11 to the Saints in the first half. EMU chipped away at the lead, taking advantage of 15 first half turnovers by the visitors, turning the Saints’ miscues into 11 points.
Siena hit intermission with a six-point lead, 31-25. Siena shot a sizzling 52 percent (13-for-25) in the first half, compared to only 20 percent (8-for-40) for Eastern. The Saints also held a 25-19 advantage on the glass. James led the Eagles with 10 first half points, while Lawson chipped in six points on two treys.
The Saints would not go away, whittling away at the Eagle lead, tying the game at 51 with 1:43 remaining. Shana McKinney (Detroit, Mich.-Osborn (Wayne C.C.)) then put the Eagles back up by two with 48 seconds to go. After coming up empty on the next possession, Siena was forced to foul, putting Huntley Rogers at the line. The sophomore missed the front end of the one-and-one, giving the Saints one more opportunity. Siena’s Stec laid one off the glass with 3 seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.
The Eagles are back in action Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 28, when they take on James Madison University in the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. EMU and JMU will be meeting for the first time, with tip-off slated for 1 p.m. (CST).
