EMU unable to capitalize on 11 corner kicks
YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University soccer team was unable to score against Northern Illinois University, battling the Huskies to a 0-0 double overtime draw in Mid-American Conference action Sunday, Oct. 5 at Scicluna Field. With the tie, EMU moves to 7-3-3 (2-1-1 MAC) while NIU goes to 5-3-4 (1-2-1 MAC) on the year.
Sophomore keeper Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) recorded six saves on the afternoon, picking up her fifth shutout of the season.
The Eagles were unable to take advantage of 11 corner kicks, compared to none for NIU, during the contest as the NIU defense held its ground. EMU also out-shot the Huskies, 15-11, over the course of the 110 minute contest but could not crack the scoreboard.
EMU had a few second half opportunities, the first coming with about 24 minutes remaining. The Eagles were awarded a free kick after an NIU foul, as Julie Kaim’s (Palos, Hills, Ill.-Palos Hills) shot was headed around by EMU before the Huskies were able to clear the ball. A little over 10 minutes later, Stephanie Janssens’ (Novi, Mich.-Novi) corner kick was deflected to the top of the box. Jessica Lathrop’s (Indianapolis, Ind.-Lawrence North) straight on shot was blocked by a Huskie defender and Carissa Wilson’s (Linden, Mich.-Linden) kick was corralled by keeper Lindsey Curnock.
The teams continued their scoreless play into both extra frames, ending the contest in a draw.
EMU continues MAC play next weekend on the road, first traveling to Buffalo, N.Y. for a date with the Bulls. UB and EMU will square off Friday, Oct. 10 at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles will then take on Kent State in Kent, Ohio, Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
