Zundel nets third goal of the season off a corner kick

BUFFALO, N.Y.- After giving up an early goal, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team regrouped to earn a 1-1 tie against the University at Buffalo in Mid-American Conference action, Friday, Oct. 10 at Alumni Field. The Bulls found the back of the net in the first three minutes, but the Eagles persevered to earn the tie.

With the tie, EMU moves to 7-3-4 (2-1-2 MAC), while Buffalo goes to 4-5-3 (0-4-1 MAC) on the year.

Earning her fourth start of the year in goal, redshirt sophomore keeper Mona Budani (Whitby, Ont.-Sinclair Secondary) made nine saves on the afternoon, allowing just the one early goal.

The Bulls struck first, striking just 2:50 into the contest when Andrea Vescio fired a high shot out of Budani’s reach, staking the Bulls an early 1-0 lead. Buffalo out-shot the Eagles in the first frame, 10-7.

EMU finally tied the game up in the second half, with just under 30 minutes remaining in regulation. Senior Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford II) headed Stephanie Janssens’ (Novi, Mich.-Novi) corner kick into the goal, knotting the game at 1-1. Zundel’s goal marked the third time this season the pair has hooked up on a corner kick.

Neither team was able to break the 1-1 tie, sending the game into overtime. In the first extra session, the Bulls had three looks on goal, but Budani came through with three saves, keeping the Eagles alive and sending the game to a second overtime. Both teams had a shot on goal in the second overtime, with both goalies making saves to end the game in a draw.

EMU continues its road swing Sunday, Oct. 12 at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The Eagles and Golden Flashes will kick off at 1 p.m., with EMU looking for its first-ever win at KSU.
