Green and White earns huge win in first match of the season

 
TERRE HAUTE, Ind.-The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened up the season this Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind., with a huge road win, defeating the nationally ranked Indiana State University Sycamores, 4-3, here at the Wabash Valley Tennis Center Saturday.
 
"This is a great win for our program," said second-year head coach Ryan Ray. "To defeat a nationally ranked team on the road shows that we are making great strides. I'm proud of the focus the ladies showed tonight. They earned this win. Winning the No. 2 doubles position was very key in the overall outcome. We still have alot to work on before we face Wisconsin next."
 
The Eagles (1-0) opened up the match, taking two out of three doubles matches from the Sycamores (0-1). Tina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany/Icking Gymnasium) and Aleksandra Stankovic (Stockholm, Sweden/Walthers Gymnasium) teamed up to take down Fadzai Masiyazi and Sarah Meghoufel, winning 8-6. Aditi Krishnan (Markham,Ontario-Canada/Markvile Secondary School) and Joanna Woo (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) won their doubles match, putting the Green and White up 1-0 going into singles action.
 
Krishnan, Woo and Stankovic all won their respective singles matches. Krishnan, at the No. 3 spot for the Green and White defeated Valeriia Petrovych in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. Stankovic, at the No. 5 slot easily defeated marie Caujolle, 6-1, 6-0. The final Eagle to take a victory in singles competition was Woo at the number six singles spot, who won by default.
 
The Eagles return to action next Friday, as they take on the University of Wisconsin. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
